Selection of material and recognizing the natural orientation of the tree is crucial in Japanese philosophy. Here the legs of a stand are cut from a single block, and the ‘cathedrals’ shows the tree as it was standing in nature. Thus, the root portion of the material will be orientated to be bottom of the leg, just as it was in nature. This also applies for the orientation of the faces of the legs. the bark side faces out while the heartwood faces inward.
